Welcome to Lawgical, the UAE’s first and, as far as we are aware, still the only legal podcast. I’m Tim Elliott. Lawgical comes to you from the Jumeirah Lakes Towers-based legal firm, HPL Yamalova & Plewka. As always, here’s the Managing Partner, Ludmila Yamalova. Great to be chatting with you as always, Ludmila.

Ludmila Yamalova
Thank you for having me, Tim. Good to see you.

This time, it’s all about how to open a bank account online. Now, I guess most banks are digital these days, or at least they claim to be. The banking sector in the Emirates is pretty high-tech. Most people would agree with that. We’ve had digital offerings going back as far as Mi Bank, Emirates Bank’s offering in the early 2000s. That was kind of a prototype in terms of a bricks-and-mortar bank offering a digital banking solution. But since then, all the retail banks in the Emirates offer digital solutions. Most of them boast that you can now go online and open an account—assuming you’ve got the right documents—and you can do it in seconds. That seems to be the state of play.

Ludmila Yamalova
Well, yes and no. If you’re just an end user and you’ve been in the UAE for a while, opening another bank account is not so difficult. But if you’re opening one for the first time, it can be fairly burdensome. As you said, on one hand, banks are embracing the digital world. On the other hand, we’re still in a transition mode. It often seems like applying online is easy because everything is available at your fingertips. But when you start going through the process, the reality can be completely different. You submit applications, hear nothing, or you get repeated calls asking for documents you’ve already submitted. So, while it may appear straightforward, the actual experience can still be quite painful at times.

Tim Elliott
It really used to be a trial to open an account, and it still can be. In the past, you needed passport copies, visa copies, employer letters—you had to provide everything short of the kitchen sink. And if you wanted to open a joint account with a spouse, that was practically impossible. It has changed and become easier, but from a legal perspective, what’s the procedure now? How do you open an account online, and what do you need to know?

Ludmila Yamalova
The first step is ensuring you’re dealing with a reputable institution. That’s paramount. Second, understand the documents you’re signing and what they entail. In practice, most people don’t read the terms and conditions or retain a copy of what they’ve signed. That’s the reality of banking—pages upon pages of legal jargon that’s hard to understand even for someone like me.

But things are evolving. Newer banks have the opportunity to set up modern, efficient processes from the outset. That’s why we wanted to share this topic today. We’ve come across a new bank that genuinely offers online account opening. It’s called Al Mariah Community Bank, the first fully digital bank in the UAE. Their platform seems to facilitate safe, secure banking while providing a smooth online experience.

Tim Elliott
So, how does it work? What’s the process to open an account with Al Mariah Community Bank?

Ludmila Yamalova
The process is impressively simple, especially for UAE residents with an Emirates ID. You start by going to their website. The Emirates ID is key because it connects to the UAE Pass system, which centralizes your information across various government entities. This integration makes the process much more streamlined.

You log in with your UAE Pass, input your Emirates ID details, and your data is automatically populated. Once you click to open an account, you submit the form, and within a few days, you’ll receive your bank card in the mail. It’s that straightforward.

Tim Elliott
That sounds efficient. What types of accounts can you open with them?

Ludmila Yamalova
The bank offers services for adults, companies, and even minors. The ability for minors to have their own bank accounts, with some level of supervision from guardians, is particularly interesting. It’s a great way to help young people learn about budgeting and financial management early on.

Tim Elliott
That’s a fantastic development. My son had to wait until he was 18 to open a bank account, but this sounds like a much better option for younger individuals. It’s also encouraging to see healthy competition in the market.

Ludmila Yamalova
Absolutely. Competition benefits everyone, and it’s exciting to see new entrants like Al Mariah Community Bank pushing the envelope. This fully digital experience shows that the market is evolving, and we can expect more innovative solutions in the future.

Tim Elliott
Thanks for walking us through that, Ludmila. It’s always fascinating to explore these changes. That’s another episode of Lawgical, this time focusing on how to open a bank account online in the UAE. As always, our legal expert here is Ludmila Yamalova, Managing Partner at HPL Yamalova & Plewka. Ludmila, thank you so much.

Ludmila Yamalova
Thank you, Tim. Always a pleasure.
